The term softwood is used to describe wood from conifers. Softwood is the source of about 80% of the world’s production of timber. Softwoods are not necessarily softer than hardwoods. In both groups there’s an enormous variation in actual wood hardness. Softwoods are used for a wide variety of different applications, from the construction industry right through to high class joinery. Most softwood is available much cheaper than any hardwood, which is why it’s so often used. The fact that most softwoods grow much faster than hardwood plays a part in their comparative cheapness as they’re easier to obtain and tend to have less impact on the environment.
Mouldings, Skirting and Architrave
Skirting is sold in a variety of heights, profiles and finishes, including chamfered, ogee, torus and ovolo. Architrave is used to hide the join between a door frame and the wall. Floor skirting boards and door architrave finish a room, and add the final touches when you’re redecorating. Generally it’s the smallest details that can turn a good job into a fabulous job. Simple timber mouldings can add interest to plain surfaces, add design flourishes that totally transforms a look, or instill character in to a whole room (not to mention hiding gaps, rough edges or joins).
There are a range of sheet materials that all have different purposes within DIY and the building industry. Plywood is ideal for exterior joinery. It can equally be used internally, and is suitable for painting. MDF Sheets are a uniform, multi-purpose fibreboard panel suitable for interior use. Hardboard is an interior panel that can be used for boxing in pipework and cupboard backs. OSB (oriented strand board) is a water-resistant, cut size panel ideal for interior use and general exterior applications. Chipboard Flooring is moisture resistant, tongued and grooved for fast installation, and is smooth sanded for subsequent floor layering. Over and above this, there is blockboard, hardibacker board, standard chipboard, MFC, sundeala…. The list goes on!
Timber decks are marvellously flexible structures that can be designed and built to suit you, your family and the property you live in. They make great additions to homes of all ages and are superb for businesses like pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants that want to create an attractive outdoor room for their customers to enjoy. Over 90% of all decks are made from suitable pressure treated softwoods because of their availability, ease of working and cost effectiveness. Hardwoods come in a range of attractive colours. They tend to be more expensive and require more care to work with than softwoods.
