Whilst we may have had one of the wettest August’s on record, overall it doesn’t feel like it’s been a bad summer. We’re currently being promised higher than average temperatures for October, but we’ll believe that when we feel it! So, the question is, are we starting to think about winter when it comes to the jobs being planned in, or will the decking and fencing projects of the summer months continue for a little longer?
Do people “plan” for winter when it comes to thinking about there property, or does winter arrive every year, as if by surprise, and leave people reeling because there homes aren’t prepared for the onslaught of terrible weather conditions?
What kind of things should homeowners be thinking about in advance? No-one could have predicted or been prepared for the overwhelming damage of last winters heavy rains, but perhaps on a smaller scale it is possible to be ready to face the harshest season?
We all tend to go into hibernation mode in the winter, spending far more time indoors that we do outside, but that’s not to say that consideration shouldn’t be given to the outside of your property before you head onto the sofa, under a blanket to wile away the winter months with X Factor and a tub of Quality Street.
Think about the extremes of weather that we could face over the coming months, from rain to snow to gales, and make an overall assessment of your property. Look at the front and rear garden – are there any trees or heavy branches that could easily be brought down and cause damage to your property or your neighbours? Has all your outdoor furniture been safely stored away so that nothing can be hurled around the garden? Is your shed, summer house, garage in reasonable condition – look at loose doors, lifting roof felt etc. These are all things that can be easily fixed now, but can create problems if left and the elements are allowed to creep into your storage areas for months, causing mould, damp and destruction to all your goods.
Make a quick check of the outside of your house. How is the roof looking? Any damaged tiles should be replaced now. Far better to have the work done now, than leave it until it’s an emergency – we all know that emergency call outs carry a price premium. Check your gutters to ensure that they are not full of leaves and moss, then hopefully you won’t face overflowing gutters when the heavy rains arrive. Lag any outdoor pipes in preparation for freezing temperatures.
In light of the likelihood that inside is where you’re going to spend much of your time, once again, it’s best to ensure you’re prepared. No-one will thank you if winter kicks in and the boiler checks out! Have your boiler serviced annually, and bleed your radiators to ensure they are running effectively. If possible, try and keep your heating running consistently through the winter months at an even temperature, this will benefit you far more than blasting it on and off and will ensure your pipes don’t freeze.
If you are spending out on heating, then it’s essential to ensure that you’re not just burning money, so make sure that your property is well insulated. Adequate loft insulation will prevent all your heat from escaping upwards and cavity wall insulation will prevent it escaping outwards.
